Hardware security

Hardware security

Canceled/postponed due to COVID-19. Two thirds of Thierrys team are quarantined in northern Italy and we feel it isn’t worth the risk to organize an event at this time. We have decided to postpone this talk. We will communicate a new date once things return to normal. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Low-level hardware security is gaining more importance in offensive security research, especially in safety-critical environments and consumer products. This talk broadly introduces the practice of hardware security through the eyes of a practicioner who works on these targets daily, covering the important bits you need to know about and elaborating with some examples.

The talk will cover:

  • Hardware security for safety critical assets
  • Common threats and mitigations
  • Enforcing data security with the NXP i.MX6UL SoC as an example
  • Decreasing attack surface with USB armory and TamaGo as an example

Speaker

Thierry started performing security assessments and penetration testing over 20 years ago. He is currently the Head of hardware security assessments for F-Secure Consulting, and is active to this day as a hands-on hardware security consultant and information security advisor. Member of the global hardware- and transportation teams, his day-to-day focus is on technical assessments and attack research covering embedded systems in anything that flies, floats, drives or might be a confused computer in disguise.
